vacation in minneapolis?

we are staying in minneapolis/st. paul right now, we will be here for about a week and after that we wanted to go to another place around minneapolis for another 3 or 4 days. i am wondering which cities or countryside or lakes… you can recommend.
i heard duluth is nice, but probable to far to drive (believe 5 hours or so), we were thinking not more then 3 or 4 hours, as we drive with a 17 month old,
plus it should be something that is nice for the baby also. lakes, parks, nice cottages, farm, animals, dude ranch, nice hotels, where do we find something like that?
